Tolman is the youngest of two younger siblings. Her family moved to England when she was just a little over a month old and stayed until she was 4 years old. After five years living in Oklahoma and West Texas for the next five, she moved to Sugar Land, Texas. She began taking acting classes at the age of 10 years old, at the Fort Bend Community Theatre. She graduated from Clements High School in 2000. Baylor University awarded her a Bachelor in Fine Arts in theatre performance. After graduation, she relocated to Dallas and was one of the founding members of Second Thought Theatre. In 2009, she moved to Chicago, Illinois, to study performance at The Second City Training Center. After her breakout performance in the television show Fargo, Tolman declined several supporting parts as mothers, wives and best friends, searching for a more unusual role.
