Clayton was born in Johnston, Rhode Island. She was a student at the University of Rhode Island and then moved to New York City to attend New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts in 2005. In 2006 she made her debut in film as a supporting actress in the independent film "December Ends". In 2012, Clayton landed the supporting role as Sarah Carter in the Disney adventure film John Carter. Later, she appeared as a guest star in the shows The Mentalist and Rizzoli & Isles. In 2014 she was selected as a lead, alongside Edwina Findley, Heather Hemmens, Zulay Henao as well as April Parker Jones in the Oprah Winfrey Network prime time soap opera If Loving You isn't working. The series ended in the year 2020 after five seasons. In 2014 she was cast alongside Miles Teller in the biographical drama Bleed For This, which is about Vinny Pazienza as well as Katey Sgal. Clayton will play the female leading lady in the film Bleed For This and two other feature-length films, The Bet, and Bad Frank, which are due to release in 2016. She played the lead role in Lifetime's Movie Cradle Swapping in 2017, as well as in Mommy's Little Angel in 2017. Clayton was also featured in 2018's Showtime drama, City on a Hill.
