Edward Regan Murphy (born April 3 1961) is an American comedian, actor and writer. He is also a producer, writer and singer. Murphy became famous as a regular participant of Saturday Night Live's sketch comedy series. Murphy is also a stand-up comic. Comedy Central's 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time lists Murphy at the No. 10. Murphy has been awarded Golden Globe Award nominations for his performances in 48 Hrs. (1982), the Beverly Hills Cop series (1984-present), Trading Places (1983), The Nutty Professor (1996) as well as Dolemite Is My Name (2019). He has also won numerous prizes for his work on the fantasy comedy film Dr. Dolittle (1998) and its 2001 sequel. Murphy was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2007 for his character James "Thunder", the soul singer, in Dreamgirls. Murphy has also worked as voice actor, with parts as the Chinese dragon Mushu in Disney's Mulan (1998), Thurgood Stubbs on the sitcom The PJs (1999-2001) as well as Donkey in the DreamWorks Animation's Shrek series (2001-2010).
