Giannulli was born Massimo Giannulli on June 4 1963, in Los Angeles to parents of Italian descent, Gene, an architect, as well as Nancy Giannulli, a homemaker. He was born in Encino, California. 3rd grade, he changed his first name to Mossimo on the advice by a teacher who suggested that it was easier to pronounce.According to some sources, after graduating from high school, he pursued studies in architecture and business at the University of Southern California for three years prior to being dismissed in 1987. after the college entrance scandal which Giannulli was involved, however, CNN reported that Giannulli convinced his father to loan the money to pay for tuition (which was later used to fund his business selling t-shirts) and faked report cards while his actual experience at the university consisting only of being a student at "USC in the spring semester in 1984 but not as a fully matriculated student. He was enrolled in the College of Continuing Education, a non-degree program that is open to all students "with no formal admission conditions'"; he lived at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity house, however, which according to a fraternity spokesman was because "having non-matriculating students join the fraternity would not be unusual.
