Hawk was so angry at his dad's baseball performance that he ran away into an avalanche. His frustration with himself was so intense that his parents requested he be psycho-evaluated at school. Tony was identified as gifted by school counselors. The test showed an IQ score of 144. From 1980 to 1981, Hawk attended Jean Farb Middle School. Then, he returned to Homecoming together with Rick Reilly where he set up a ramp for a demonstration of skateboarding. Since it provided a outlet for his excess energy, his parents encouraged the sport of skating. Hawk's abilities were improved and he managed to compete professionally when he was 14.
