Alexandra Elizabeth Sheedy was born in New York City on June 13, 1962. She has two siblings, brothers Patrick and sister Meghan. Her mother, Charlotte Baum (nee Sheedy) is a journalist and press agent. She was active in the women's rights and civil liberties movements. The father of her daughter John J. Sheedy Jr. is a Manhattan advertising executive. Her mother is Eastern European Jewish, whereas her father comes from an Irish Catholic background. Her maternal grandmother is born in Odessa, Ukraine Her parents divorced in 1971.She went to the Bank Street School for Children which was followed by Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School in New York City, graduating in 1980. She began dancing at the American Ballet Theatre at age six years old and was planning to pursue an all-time job. She gave up dance in favor of acting full time, however, and then started studying acting with an acting instructor Harold Guskin. When she was 12 years old, she wrote a book, She Was Nice to Mice. At age 18, Sheedy moved to Los Angeles, California, where she was enrolled in the department of drama at University of Southern California. Sheedy started her acting career and intermittently completed three years' worth of courses toward a BFA degree in acting.
