While on the stage, Tapping continued her studies in the theatre arts. She appeared in several commercials for television and had various roles in television and film productions like The Outer Limits and The X-Files. The actress also founded an ensemble of comedians called known as the "Random Acts" along with her co-stars Katherine Jackson and Anne Marie Kerr, in Toronto in the early 1990s.Tapping is most well-known for her portrayal of Samantha Carter in the science fictional television show Stargate SG-1, which premiered in 1997. Following the time that SG-1 ended its run, Tapping reprised the role of Samantha Carter on Stargate Atlantis as the new commander of the Atlantis expedition. In season 5, Tapping's role on show was reduced to the role of "special guest-star" with only occasional appearances because she chose to focus her efforts on the creation of a brand new series for Syfy called Sanctuary. The original series of eight webisodes which were made available online in 2007 was expanded to the present form of the show. Most of the scenes and characters were created entirely in green screen using CGI. Tapping was the director and star of the show.In 2007, she was awarded an award called the Canadian Comedy Award for Best Actress for her part in the short film Breakdown.On the 18th of September in 2012 she was cast as an angel called Naomi in season 8 of the TV show Supernatural. She was featured in seven episodes as a regular character. She reprised her part in season 13 of "Funeralia" which was five years after her character's apparent suicide. She was also named ACTRA's 2015 Women Of The Year.
