 Lionel Andres Messi[note 1] a Argentine professional soccer player. He is a forward for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain as well as captains the Argentina national team. He is widely considered to be one of the best footballers ever. Messi won seven Ballon d'Or Awards and an all-time record of six European Golden Shoes and was chosen for the Ballon d'Or dream team in 2020. He played his entire professional career with Barcelona until he quit the club in 2021. He won 35 club records, including 10 La Liga titles as well as seven Copa del Rey titles. Messi is an incredibly prolific goal scorer and innovative player. He holds records for the highest number of goals scored in La Liga (474), the highest number of goals scored in the course of a European league season (50) and the highest number of goals scored in La Liga (36) or the UEFA Champions League (8) and also the highest number of assists during La Liga (192, 21 and 17). The record for the highest number of international goals achieved by an South American male is also held by Messi (91). Messi holds the record for the most international goals that a South American male (91). In just three years, he had established himself as a key member of the club's team. In the 2008-09 season, Messi helped Barcelona win the first triple crown in Spanish football. At the age of 22, Messi won his first Ballon d'Or. After three years of success, Messi won four consecutive Ballons d'Ors and became the first player to win the prize for four consecutive seasons. He also was the top scorer of all time for Barcelona's La Liga, European and European goals. Following his second place finish in the Ballon d'Or, Messi was second only to Cristiano Ronaldo, who was his alleged his rival in the game. Then he was back to his best during the 2014-15 season and became the all-time highest scoring player in La Liga. This led to a record-breaking second triple for Barcelona and brought him to the fifth Ballon d'Or. In the year 2018, Messi was named the captain of Barcelona. He was awarded the record-breaking sixth Ballon d'Or in 2019. He signed his contract in August 2021 to join Paris Saint-Germain, but this was not a formal contract.
