Meyer was born Pauline Joyce Hutchison in south St. Louis in 1943. After her birth, her father enlisted in the military to fight in World War II. Interviews have shown that her father was sexually assaulting her once he returned. She discusses the experience in her conversations with. A graduate from O'Fallon Technical High School, St. Louis, she was married to an auto salesman for a portion of the time just after completing her final year of high school. The marriage lasted five years. The wife claims that her husband cheated on her numerous times and she persuaded her spouse to steal her employer's checks. The money was used to travel to California. She claims that she returned the money many years later. Meyer was a frequent visitor to bars in the area after her divorce and met Dave Meyer, an engineer draftsman. They got married on the 7th of January 1967.
