Kim aged sixteen years old at the time, took part in the K-pop second season Star 2 television show that was a competition. While she was not able to get through the second round of ranking audition Yang Hyun-suk did invite Kim back as an extra in the final casting round. Kim performed a duet from Taeyang's "I Need A Girl" alongside Jo Yoo-min. 9. Yang was able to cast both of them and then grouped Kim together with Nicole Curry and Lee Sookyung in the last round. Kim was eliminated at the conclusion of the casting round. Kim represented Jellyfish Entertainment together with Kang Mi-na as well as Kim Na-young in Produce 101 in January 2016. 11 Kim was selected to "Group A" for the premiere episode. Kim also won the name "God Sejeong" and the first-place rating in some episodes. The first day of April on the 1st of April, 2016, the show was over and the final I.O.I lineup, which comprised the top 11 winners of the poll, was revealed. Kim was awarded 525,352 votes, and was admitted to I.O.I, was named the second contestant. The album Chrysalis the lead track, "Dream Girls", was released on May 4, 2016. 14 I.O.I was promoted for just one year before officially disbanding in January of 2017. Following the expiration of their contracts, the members were reunited with their respective agencies.
