He is a student at Hikarizaka high school and is described as an undergraduate. However, he is not known for starting fights. His mother, Atsuko, died in an accident with a car when he was a child. Tomoya lives with his father, Naoyuki, since then. They fight a lot and Tomoya has lost his dream of playing pro basketball after injuring his shoulder in an altercation with Naoyuki. He is a close friend to Kotomi Ichinose, and is the best friend of Youhei Moonohara. At the beginning of the visual novel, Tomoya is introduced to Nagisa Furukawa, who is his good friend, and later girlfriend/wife.In After Story, Tomoya is an electrician after he graduates from high school. He gets married Nagisa, and they have one daughter, named Ushio. Nagisa becomes ill during her pregnancy and Tomoya takes care of her. But she passes away shortly after birth. Tomoya is depressed and decides to leave Ushio's care with Akio and Sanae. Later, Tomoya realizes that he's placing Ushio through the same kind of relationship he and his father experienced and is soon a better father. When Ushio passes away, Tomoya realizes that Ushio is the Girl in the Illusionary World. He then makes use of light orbs to go back the hands of time to the day when Nagisa is in labor and stops her and Ushio from becoming dead. In the final analysis, Tomoya lives with his daughter and wife as an unfailing family.
